Kenya’s forest cover currently stands at 8.8 percent, which falls short of the minimum 10 percent target established by the country’s 2010 Constitution. In response to this alarming fact, the Government through the President’s office launched the National Program for Accelerated Forestry and Rangelands Restoration in 2022, raising the tree cover target from 10 percent to 30 percent.
This ambitious initiative aims to restore 10.6 million hectares of degraded land by planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
The program is a key component in the fight against climate change, addressing critical issues such as floods, droughts, and unpredictable weather patterns. Additionally, this effort aligns with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) championed by the President; HE. DR. William Samoei Ruto, emphasizes environmental preservation, sustainability, and adherence to the commitments made in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The initiative supports the broader objectives of the Paris Agreement, where Kenya has pledged to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) by 32 percent by 2030.
Kenya’s forest cover has seen a significant decline over the years. In 1990, forests covered approximately 8 percent of the country’s land area, but by 2000, this figure had dropped to 6 percent.
The situation became even more dire by 2018, with forest cover shrinking to just 5.9 percent of the total land area, underscoring the urgent need for action.
